Why is toothpaste so often NOT vegan?

Many people don't realize it, but most toothpaste brands are not vegan. Even brands that call themselves "clean," "natural," or "green."

This is because animal ingredients have been used as standard in oral care for decades. Not because they are better, but because "that's how it's always been done."

The result: products that absolutely could be plant-based, but simply aren't.

Common non-vegan ingredients in toothpaste

🐝 Glycerin (without 'vegetable' indication)
Can be both vegetable and animal. If not specified? Then it remains unclear.

🐄 Casein
A milk protein sometimes used for enamel protection.

🐛 Carmine / CI 75470
Red dye made from crushed cochineal insects (yes, really).

🐑 Lanolin
Derived from sheep's wool. Sometimes found in oral care products.

🐟 Chitosan
Derived from shellfish and sometimes used for antibacterial properties.

If there's no vegan quality mark? Then "probably" is often the best you'll get.
