Which ingredients are bad in toothpaste
Share
Toothpaste is one of those everyday care products whose ingredients we don't think about. We use it daily, without considering what exactly is in it. But did you know that some toothpaste brands contain ingredients that are actually bad for our health? Let's take a look at some of these ingredients and why you might want to avoid them.
Microplastics
- Microplastics are tiny plastic particles added to some toothpastes for scrubbing and polishing teeth. While they can be effective in removing stains and plaque, they can also harm the environment and our health. This is why microplastics are bad for our health:
- Chemicals: Plastic particles can contain or attract various chemicals, such as plasticizers, flame retardants, and pesticides. When microplastics are ingested, these chemicals can be released and potentially have harmful effects on health.
- Inflammatory reactions: There is concern that microplastics can cause inflammatory reactions in the body. For example, small particles can penetrate the lungs and cause inflammation, which may contribute to lung diseases such as asthma.
- Possible carcinogenic properties: Some studies suggest that certain chemicals in microplastics, such as bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, may be carcinogenic. Long-term exposure to such chemicals can increase the risk of cancer.
- Disruption of hormone balance: Certain chemicals in microplastics can have endocrine-disrupting properties, meaning they can disrupt the normal functioning of hormones in the body. This can lead to a wide range of health problems, including fertility issues and developmental disruptions in children.
It's logical that you'd rather not ingest microplastics while brushing your teeth. But besides our health, they are also bad for nature. As soon as you spit out your toothpaste (with microplastics), they go down the drain and eventually end up in our waterways, polluting our oceans, where they pose a threat to marine life.
SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate)
SLS is a cleansing agent often used in toothpastes for its foaming properties. While foam might give a feeling of cleanliness, SLS can also cause irritation to the mouth and sensitive tissues. Furthermore, it can cause allergic reactions in some people.
Titanium Dioxide
Titanium dioxide is added to toothpastes to make them white. However, this ingredient has been linked to health risks. Studies have shown that nano-sized titanium dioxide can be harmful to the intestines and potentially carcinogenic.
Triclosan
Triclosan is an antibacterial agent added to toothpastes to combat plaque. However, the use of triclosan is controversial due to potential side effects, including hormonal disruption and the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
When choosing a toothpaste, it is important to carefully check the ingredient list and avoid what may be harmful to your health and the environment. Fortunately, there are brands that focus on providing safe and effective dental care products without harmful ingredients.
