Comparing Toothpaste Brands: How Does Your Toothpaste Score on Sustainability, Harmful Ingredients, Health, and Price?
Table 1: Toothpaste Brand Comparison Table based on Ingredients*

Toothpaste is a product we use daily. Often, we don't consider the harmful ingredients present in our everyday personal care products. The choice of toothpaste makes a huge difference, both for your own health and that of the planet. We have researched the offerings in the Dutch market. The results show that there is room for improvement among almost all leading brands. Curious about what we discovered? Read on and see if your toothpaste is the best choice for you.
The average price per brush
The study shows that the average cost per brush is €0.07. There are brands where you pay only €0.03 per brush and also brands that charge €0.10 per brush. Remarkably, it's not the case that more expensive toothpastes are free from harmful ingredients. Our advice: check if you're truly getting value for money when it comes to ingredients, quality, and sustainability.
Traditional tubes dominate the market
As many as 79% of toothpaste brands still use traditional single-use tubes. These tubes often end up in landfills after use. Recycling toothpaste tubes is difficult due to the combination of different types of plastic and metal in the packaging.
Harmful ingredients in toothpaste
What's actually in your toothpaste? Our research shows that 64% of brands contain one or more ingredients that may be harmful to your health or the environment. This includes aggressive foaming agents like SLS or titanium dioxide. Take a critical look at the ingredient list of your toothpaste.
Natural ingredients are effective
Only 28% of toothpaste brands contain more than 95% natural ingredients. Although there is a trend towards more natural products, this percentage remains relatively low. It's a missed opportunity, as natural ingredients can be just as effective for your oral health and are better for the environment.
Distinctive and sustainable packaging
ReBloom Care is the only brand that offers toothpaste in a glass container with a pump and refill packages. Toothpaste tablets also score well on sustainability with their packaging. Choosing these packaging forms makes it possible to drastically reduce waste. The refill packages ensure that you never have to use single-use tubes again.
